What is Blood Alcohol Content and How Does it Affect my Driving Abilities?

By: Larry Goldberg

Blood alcohol content, BAC, is the concentration ratio of alcohol in your blood stream. It is measured in three different ways – a percentage by mass, mass per volume or a combination of both. In most countries, blood alcohol content is measured in grams of alcohol per 1000 milliliters of blood.

It is very difficult to tell what your blood alcohol content is based on how many drinks you have – this is due to the extreme variations in physiology and each person’s alcohol tolerance. However, generally two standard drinks with 20 grams of alcohol will increase a sober person’s blood alcohol content to 0.05, and that is the same in Mexico and Canada as well. Common carriers such as buses are restricted to a 0.01 BAC volume.
